Anyone is aware of that there are practical reasons for not having horned Viking helmets. Any battle smart warrior would understand that having horns jetting out from your helmet would give the enemy a place to grasp and throw you around. In battle, Vikings wore customary Sutton Hoo sort of helmets that did not have horns.  Really?  Yes!

Before the horn myth was made widespread, Viking helmets were shown to possess wings on them. This is often conjointly not traditionally accurate. But where did these myths come back from? Old texts suggest that clergymen might have worn headdresses with horns for spiritual ceremonies. They will are worn for decorations as well. However, what got the myths going was the traditional Romans and Greeks who came back from Britain saying the troopers and folks wore outlandish headdresses and helmets.  Additionally, Roman generals and soldiers claimed that the Gauls and Germanic tribes typically wore helmets with horns or antlers, and typically whole animals on their heads for intimidation.

This half might be accurate to some extent, however it will not mean the Vikings raided towns with their fearsome helmets.  However, this is often most likely where the Viking horned helmet came into being.  In fact, this tradition and myth was passed down from generation to generation by stories and pictures.

In the modern world, Viking helmets are portrayed with horns not because they are traditionally accurate, but because they create smart looking costumes. Who would not wish an intimidating, blood thirsty Viking warrior sporting a horned helmet?  Raping and pillaging through out Western and Eastern Europe.Spreading of the Genes, that is why some believe Eastern European women are so gorgeous!
